ArtsQuest unveils sculpture
"The Four Elements," is a spectacular glass sculpture that stands a whopping 40 feet tall and features over 900 pieces of handmade glass.
Located in the center of ArtsQuest’s three-story-tall spiral staircase, “The Four Elements” is built from custom-crafted glass pieces made at ArtsQuest's Hot Glass Studio in the Banana Factory, Bethlehem, PA. The work of art, dedicated during a special ceremony recently, was designed by AQ’s glass studio artists John Choi and Dennis Gardner and took more than six months to create.
“The Four Elements” weighs approximately 3,700 pounds and is illuminated by a bank of LED lights. This gives the sculpture a completely different look once the sun goes down. The sculpture itself was created from hot glassblowing techniques, glass sculpting, flameworking and stained glass work.
Choi and Gardner, along with glass artists Dan Getz, Brian Toseland and the family of glass students at the Banana Factory's hot glass studio, put uncounted hours into the project. The assembly alone took more than two weeks to complete.
From a personal standpoint, it was truly amazing to see the progression from design and color choices to the final installation. This is a true legacy piece that will be around for generations. Choi and Gardner rock!
